What Is A Diving Mask?

A diving mask is an equipment or tool used by divers and fishermen when diving to protect their face. There are different types of diving masks available in today’s market. These types varied depending on their functions and uses. The full-face diving mask is used by scuba divers to protect their entire face including their nose, mouth, eyes, giving them the advantage to breath both in the nose and mouth. The traditional diving mask that covers only the eyes and the nose are commonly used by free divers. It is lightweight and easy to use. Although it does not give the advantage of breathing in the nose, it is still being widely used because of its flexibility and usage.

Why Do We Prepare A Diving Mask?

There are several reasons why we need to prepare our diving mask, especially if we just purchased it from the store. One is the presence of factory materials in the mask that we need to remove. It is usually put by the manufacturer to maintain the elegance of their product. This means that we need some tools to deal with it. But don’t worry, these tools are easy to find and just right inside our home. It is very important that we need to remove this surplus of materials inside the mask to avoid discomfort, and the most common issue is the fogging.

How Do We Prepare A Diving Mask?

Now, how do we really prepare our diving mask upon purchase? It’s very simple and all you need are these basic tools and materials. You must prepare a toothpaste, scrubber, lighter, clean dry piece of cloth, water, and a defogger. Here are the steps that you must follow accordingly to get your mask ready for your first diving adventure.

Step 1.

Please note that this only applies to diving masks that have glass lenses. This does not apply to any polycarbonate materials. Place your mask properly and put the toothpaste in its lenses, both the left and right side. If you have a round or oval lens in your mask you can simply put the toothpaste around it.

Step 2.

Then use your scrubber to scrub the materials inside the glass lenses, and just do it slowly. After you’re done scrubbing it, use the water and rinse the glasses to remove all the remaining paste. You can then use the clean piece of cloth to dry the mask. Make sure that it is dry and test it by blowing the mask with your breath. If it’s still fogging then proceed to the next step.

Step 3.

The next step is to get your lighter and use it to remove the remaining materials normally silicon that was not taken out by the toothpaste. Place your lighter in the lenses of the mask and make sure not to let the fire burn the glasses by placing it in a long period of time, just 3 to 5 seconds will do. And do it all around the glasses especially on the spots where the mask fogs a lot. And when you think it’s done, test it again by blowing your breath on the lenses. If it no longer fogs then you’re good to go. But wait, there’s still a last step you need to do.

Step 4. Use A Defogger

Defoggers are a great help to make your mask clean and avoid defogging especially if it hits cold surfaces, because you will be using it underwater making it considerably foggy anytime. A simple spray of your defogger will do the task and you’re good to go!

Conclusion

Cleaning and preparing your diving mask are just very simple things to do and do not require any expertise, but play an important role in your diving experience. The next time you purchase a diving mask make sure to follow the simple and easy steps to prepare it to protect your face when diving underwater. It is not that hard, but very necessary especially when you are diving in deeper locations.
